CASIO RZ1 Vintage Sampling....for sale!

This is a retro 80s drum machine. I'm having a good old new years clear out and as this has been sat gathering dust in my studio for a couple of years. You can read about it here (and look at some better pictures)
http://www.vintagesynth.com/casio/rz1.php
There's everything you'd expect on a drum machine - pads for all the sounds, a pattern sequencer and mixer for each individual drum. For a Casio it's surprisingly well equipped with extras - there's individual outs for all the channels, as well as full MIDI connections.

The main selling point is the primitive 80s drum sounds and the sampling function, which has the same trashy 8-bit sound as the SK1 keyboard. It may be of interest to circuit benders too.
It's fully functional and in good nick, no original box but it does have a manual which was kindly printed out by the person I bought it off originally.

JOMOX XBase 09....for sale!

Up for sale is my Jomox XBase 09.
This drum machine is in as new condition. It looks like it just left the factory!!
It comes with both German and English manuals and original box

Heres what Vintage Syth have to say
The XBase-09 is serious about emulating the Roland TR-909. Like the 909, it is an analog drum machine, and it sounds just like the 909, and more! It offers the same types of analog controls that the TR-808 and TR-909 did such as tuning, level, decay, snap, etc. However it provides more of these controls for more sounds than the originals ever did and has MIDI implementation and Patch memory making the XBase-09 a much more versatile machine than those originals.

Kick and snare are true analog, not emulation and not sampled. The Hihats, cymbal, ride, rimshot, claps and noise sounds are samples but are still quite tweakable. All your edited sounds can be stored into the 100 patches of memory. Use the built-in LFOs to modulate the Bass drum pitch, Snare Tune, Snare Snap, Snare Noise Tune, HiHat Tune or LFO 2.

The XBase-09's built-in sequencer is also more advanced yet faithful to the style of its mentors. Step or Real-Time programming just like it's done on the 909 and 808! However, on the XBase, any edits to the sounds will also be stored with the pattern or song! This really liven's up your beats and allows you freedom and control to do things not easily possible on the original beat boxes! There's also an extensive Shuffle mode. Of course the XBase-09 is also happy as a simple drum tone module, with all editable controls accessible using MIDI. The controls also send MIDI data when tweaked so you can record real-time edits into your external sequencer. If you're looking for the TR-909 that should have been, here it is! Authentic sounds with more functionality and modern MIDI specs make this the perfect 909 for the 90's and beyond. Its only limitations are 3 voice polyphony and it's expensive. The AirBase-99 is a cheaper rack-mount alternative with added Toms.

ROLAND Rhythm TR77 Analogue...for sale!

Roland TR-77 Analogue Drum Machine.
This was the first product to be produced buy Roland and the first in a long line of awesome drum machines

Its in great working order and good condition considering its nearly 40 years old!!
Here is a write up i found online.
The last one of these sold for £170

Anyhow, time for a little history... The Rhythm-77 (TR-77) was the product that launched the Roland Corp. in 1972 and was the flagship of the Rhythm trio, which included the R-33 and R-55. Its place in history is secured as the first Roland drum machine ever made. It was Ikutaro Kakehashi's baby which he used to introduce the world to ROLAND after he sold off Ace Tone and moved on to bigger things. The Rhythm-77 (TR-77) came in two versions, the more common organ style wooden case with built in music stand and a black tolex "roadie protected" (TR-77V). Incidentally, if you don't already know TR stood for Transistor Rhythm. It had separate faders for the Kick, Snare, Guiro and Hi-Hat/Cymbal/Maracas, making it a very flexible machine in the studio. As with many early drum machines you could get more out of them by selecting multiple rhythms and layering them over each other.

Sonically, the 77 is probably the warmest sounding of all Roland's analogue beat boxes (before or since). The kick does lack punch but more than made up for that in bass content and the percussion sounds are very nice indeed. The standout sound has to be the guiro pattern which you can fade in over the top of the Cha-Cha and Mambo rhythms. Unashamedly "lounge" and instantly recognisable.

The preview demo, (below) re-creates some of the TR-77's most well known recorded moments. Initially, you hear a combination of Cha-Cha & Baion (Ultravox's "Hiroshima Mon Amour"). As it plays, the guiro is faded up, then the Hi-Hat, and finally it drops down to just the snare and kick on Foxtrot 1. There we added some vintage spring reverb and an EH Electric Mistress pedal to recreate Gary Numan's "I Nearly Married a Human" from Replicas.

You can spot the R-77 on quite a few tracks from the late '70s. It was quite popular for a few years until the CompuRhythm range took over. Gary Numan used it briefly on the "Replicas" album before moving on to the CR-78. Ultravox (with John Foxx) also used a 77 first before Foxx immortalised the CR-78 on his seminal "Metamatic" album. The 77 is also heard quite prominently in the intro to Squeeze's "Take Me I'm Yours" and "Girls On Film" by Duran Duran.

HERES A REVIEW BY SOME GUY !!!
This is no toy. It's a well specified, reliable, well made, easy to use little drummer. It runs on batteries and often comes with a silver padded case. Henk has totally got it wrong as I'm sure everyone realises. A TR505 and DDD-1???...give me strength! The HR-16 was made by Alesis, so like me, I doubt there are any fully working examples about! Everything was 12 bit in those days..it doesn't sound weak or powerless(?). Boss made 2 versions...the A and E. Both are great little units. One is electric drums, the other acoustic. The sound is strong, Roland stuff. Tis is a better prospect than the 606 which is unreliable, limited and actually quite difficult to use. Also, that unit's claim to fame is that it looks like a 303! 30usd is sooo' 2003. The 220 has been collected, so expect to pay quite a bit for a good example. The few I've repaired have been water damaged. I tend to buy the totally-broken units I've had to skavvy for spares. The pads and switches are very reliable, unlike most Roland switches of the time. You can plug in a set of phones and compose great drum patterns whilst stuck on the bus/tube. Try doing that on a 909!

CHEAP AS HELL WITH BUY IT NOW!

Magical Vintage UNIVOX SR-55 Drum Machine. This unit is in great working condition and sounds awesome. Cosmetically it is in good condition, the buttons are scratched up, and one replaced knob (the pot is original). I believe this to be one of the earliest models 1969 - early 70's. There are no markings with a model number and the serial number is left blank.

VINTAGE MPC Percussion Computer...for sale!

Early 1980's MPC flightcased drum machine, this i seriously cool looking drum machine, i will admit im not an expert on these things and have only been able to do a basic test with a set of headphones. All the pads are working and all of the decay, pitch, volume, tone, bend and mix knobs all seem to be working fine aswell, but ive not got a clue as to all of the keypad functions nor linking it to a computer, etc. All of the LED' light up and when you press keys on the keypad they change from one setting to another and also flash in time or in sequence. Basically, it looks as though it all works but just in case im selling AS-IS so's not to dissapoint anyone.

Its a heavy machine so th UK postage is £14.00 or you can collect if you wish, comes with mains lead, instructions and a C64 interface. The foam in the lid is a bit sticky as it is starting to age and perish.

VINTAGE KENT K110 Analog Rhythm Master...for sale!

Vintage 1960's KENT Rhythm Master Drum Machine. This unit is in working condition and sounds very nice. It has an extremely unique sound not offered by other machines of its kind. This is an extremely RARE analog drum machine! The famous Kent K-110 drum machine was released soon after the Korg Donca Matic. The K-100 series are said by some to be the first "real" drum machines. All rhythms are working, the pots can be a little scratchy, and there is a bit of noise, as to be expected from a machine this age. Could probably use a recap on the PSU, but perfectly useable as-is. Cosmetically it is in nice condition, there are a couple of nicks and dings. The back cover appears to be missing. Perfect for sampling, chopping up beats, add delay some reverb and things get real psyched-out. This is a great experimental minimalist piece.

FREE walnut and paper drum machine!

I’m sure the title has got you wondering … well, the d-touch drum machine is a free piece of software that lets you make DIY beats and drum patterns using a piece of paper, a webcam, and … walnuts.

Actually, it doesn’t have to be walnuts, just about anything will do – the drum loop is controlled by arranging objects on an piece of paper. The paper is arranged in 11 rows, and works like a traditional x0x-style programming grid: Each row corresponds to a different sound, and each column determines the timing of the drum sound trigger within the loop.

Best of all, it’s free.
You can download the application (link below), It’s free, although registration is required.

Now all we need is for them to created a virtual paper TB303 and we’ll be all set.

If you didn’t hate Moby for having a better birthday than you, the multiple duplicate rare drum machines that line his studio walls may just push you over that edge.

KORG ELECTRIBE ER1 mk2...for sale!

You are bidding on my KORG ER1 mk2, UK model, as new condition, hardly used, boxed with manual and genuine Korg power pack.

With a more powerful groove than ever before, this advanced rhythm machine arms you with an analog beat that’s all your own.

The intuitively designed Korg Electribe R mkII is packed with fat, innovative sounds produced by DSP synthesis technology, a classic interface for creating beats and tweaking them in realtime, and the ultimate array of up-to-date dance styles.

- An amazing rhythm machine with a cool new look!
- Many new patterns representing the latest dance styles
- Powerful Cross Modulation adds a new dimension to your sounds
- Audio Input function can be used to rhythmically gate two incoming signals for cool effects
- Step Sequencer for easy input of patterns
- “Motion Sequence” function records knob movements
- Low Boost and Delay effects
- Tap Tempo and MIDI Clock for synchronizing with an external sequencer, etc.

An awesome analog beat box
The Korg Electribe R mkII is a new generation of rhythm machine that is enhanced by spontaneous knob-based editing of analog drums and sound effects. After you create your ultimate sounds, you can use the Electribe R mkII’s internal step-sequencer to create original rhythms. Sound editing is simple; just turn the knobs to adjust the various elements of the sound. You can use the onboard sounds in conjunction with the external audio input to create unconventional rhythms that have never been heard before.

Cross Mod creates aggressive new sounds
A new cross modulation function (replacing the previous Ring Mod) can be applied to percussion synthesizers 1 and 2 to take your DSP drum sounds into bold new timbral areas. Use it in combination with the motion sequence function to create unimaginably extreme sounds.

Use external audio with your grooves
You can also run two external sounds into the Korg ER-1mkII. They can each be rhythmically gated in tempo with your music using the same simple step key interface. By using the knobs to modify the level, duration and panning of these external sounds, you can create truly unique and experimental rhythms.

Step record with ease
The Electribe R mkII’s step sequencer lets you use the 16 pad keys to make rhythms from the sounds you create. Since you can hear the results as well as see them while you step-record, you can instinctively create cool patterns.

Add motion to your mix
Knob movements you make to edit the sound – such as changing the volume of parts, or opening/closing the filter – can be recorded directly into the sequencer. You can use these to add timbral change to your phrases, panning and other motion-inducing fun. These Motion Sequences are saved in each pattern along with your sounds and phrases.

Amazing new sounds and patterns
The mkII also boasts a significantly expanded list of new preset patterns that cover every type of dance music from techno, house, trance, two-step, electro, R&B, hip-hop, drum'n'bass, big beat, IDM, trip-hop, and lounge. This broad selection provides you with powerful grooves for your performances and productions.

Take control
You can control the Korg Electribe R mkII from an external MIDI sequencer, keyboard, sampler, or other device to integrate it into your current production and performance setup.

ROLAND D2 Groovebox...for sale!

Roland D2 Groovebox

+ power supply

In good condition and full working order, though it doesnt include its manual though does come with a power supply

The manual can be downloaded here http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/d2.php#

Although not as expensive at the MC505 it features many similar functions and capabilities Roland's D2 Groovebox is a compact, performance-oriented Groovebox (sequencer/sound module)--sort of a smaller MC-505--designed entirely around Roland's D-Field Controller technology. This touch-sensitive pad makes it easy to program and modify patterns, sounds, effects and more simply by touching the surface. It has all of the 505's sounds and a similar sequencer with 150 all-new patterns including the latest 2-Step and R&B styles.

The D-Field controller at the heart of the D2 (also featured on the V-Synth) offers three distinct modes: SOUND makes playing patterns and sound effects easy by touching the D-Field; XY provides simultaneous control over two parameters (e.g. filter cutoff + resonance); SPIN creates turntable-style effects by tracing the pad in a circular motion.

The D2 has more than enough sounds inside, with 600 Preset patches and 30 Preset drum kits from the MC-505. These dance-oriented sounds include ultra-fat bass and lead synths, screaming TB-303's, dance piano and strings, plus 30 floor-pounding drum kits. Phrase/Groove loops are also plentiful with 150 patterns plus 240 RPS (Realtime Phrase Sequence) patterns. There is a new Step Recording method using the D-Field and 32 LEDs as well. Separate Reverb, Delay and Multi-FX sections with Groove-oriented algorithms add space and effects to your sounds & grooves. And with the D2's Megamix function, it's easy to remix patterns into your own creations using the D-Field or Value dial.

The D2 is an awesome concept in terms of hands-on, real-time performance control. However the hidden menus and overall navigation can cause some headaches. If you want to edit your own sounds, you may want to connect a MIDI Controller to tweak all the sounds you want and save into one of the 256 users patches. The D2 is definitely designed for the electronica, dance and hip-hop musician on a budget. It is not as complete a Groovestation package as the MC-505 or MC-909, but its D-Field controller is very novel and fun to use. Because the D2 is fairly cheap, it does make a great toy to add to your arsenal if manipulating beats and grooves in real-time and at the touch of finger is what you're in to.

GAMEBOY drum machine rom!

You know how drummers tap desks, objects, and anything around them incessantly, often unaware of the fact that they’re doing it, until people get annoyed? Well, now you don’t need a drummer around: you can program a Game Boy to do the same thing.

Jowan Sebastian has built a brilliant, elegant application for Game Boys called kBANG. Wire up a Game Boy to other objects — like solenoids, simple mechanical devices that can perform a tapping action — and you’ve got a real-world drum machine. Enough glitchy beats: physical objects become percussion.

kBANG: Game Boy Drum Machine

If you want to try this yourself, he has posted a ROM, but you’ll be on your own building the interface.

THE Great Bleep Forward on t'BBC!

If you're the least bit interested in Electronic music, synths or DRum Machines.....which I'm sure you are or you wouldn't be reading this!!! we have just read about this ace new BBC Radio6 documentary! here's more info about it taken from one of our fave blogs RetroThing

BBC Radio 6 is rebroadcasting The Great Bleep Forward, a four part series from 2004 that looks at the birth of electronic music.

The Beeb blurb says, "The story of modern music is one of subversion and experimentation, of heroes and villains. But what if we've got it all wrong? What if the real subversives didn't wear leather and denim but smart suits and white lab coats? What if the true experimentation wasn't with LSD but with DX7's and S900s? What if the real heroes of music aren't John, and Paul, Mick and Keith, but Ralf, Florian, Robert and Wendy!

The Great Bleep Forward is a series four programmes, presented by Andrew Collins exploring the history of electronic music. Hear the first baby's cry of the moog synthesiser, embrace the difficult childhood of prog rock, grapple with the 'experimental' teenage years of the New Romantics and discover the middle aged maturity and nostalgia of the present day. You'll also get a sense of the sound of the future.

The series features interviews with many of the key players in the development of electronic music including Robert Moog, Kraftwerk's Ralph Hutter, Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood, Factory's Tony Wilson, Thomas Dolby, The Human League, Primal Scream, A Guy Called Gerald, Zoot Woman and Grandaddy."

The scope seems a bit broader than the recent BBC 4 Synth Britannia documentary, which focused on a handful of pivotal years in the early 1980s. [thanks, Stuart!]

Listen to The Great Bleep Forward online (until Oct 26, 2009)

THANKS TO RETROTHING FOR THIS INFO....CHECK EM OUT THEY ARE ACE!

TR808 Classic Beats on Korg Electribe SX part 1!

Recreations, again by ear, of some classic early 80s beats that were originally made on a Roland TR-808 drummachine. This became the signature sound for freestyle music and later for house.

No actual records were sampled. All sounds are from the 808, except the synth drum solos played on the ribbon controller. I noticed that some of the tracks actually used LinnDrum kicks *. Only the SX's internal effects and synthesis were used.

Mantronix - 808 Beats
Shannon - Let the Music Play
Freeez - IOU
Man Parrish - Hip Hop Bebop
GLOBE & Whiz Kid - Play that Beat Mr. DJ *
Nineteen - Paul Hardcastle *
C.O.D. - In the Bottle
Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing

TRANS Drumulator Express - part II!

drumulator drum machine individual outputs through
sherman filter, Analogue Systems Reverb and OSCillator controlled by joystick.

http://www.myspace.com/latinsizer

DRUMULATOR:
Created in the wake of the Emulator sampler-synths, E-mu unleashed the Drumulator sample-based drum-machines. The Drumulator was E-mu's attempt at creating a rhythm machine like the Linn LM-1 that was better and cheaper. What they made wound up becoming a huge hit for E-mu. The Drumulator had eight drum sounds on a ROM microchip which were gritty, lo-fi 12-bit samples of basic drum sounds...but they were some classic sounds! The Drumulator II added sampling so you could bring in your own sounds. Samples could be truncated, looped, etc.

The Drumulator was primarily a drum machine, however, and offered sequencing that could be accomplished in real-time for a live feel. Or it could be meticulously programmed via step entry and edit modes. Up to 36 sequenced patterns can be stored, chained and mixed to create up to 8 songs. Your sequences and sample data can be stored to floppy diskettes. The Drumulator can be connected to an old computer (like an Apple II) for better visual sequencing and editing too. The Drumulator II went on to become the even better SP-12 drum machine. Drumulators have been used by various musicians, from Latinsizer, Howard Jones to Hardfloor.

AKAI MPD24 MPD 24 MIDI PAD CONTROLLER...for sale!

AKAI MPD24 MIDI PAD CONTROLLER
Up for auction we have an AKAI MPD24 midi pad controller. The unit is in mint condition as I only used it a couple of times. I am selling it with the original box, manual and inStallation CD as seen in the picture.

More info:
The MPD24 is a MIDI-over-USB pad controller for DJs, programmers, producers, and others musicians. Built around the controls from Akai Professional's industry-standard MPC series, the MPD24 is an expressive and intuitive instrument for the studio and stage.

The heart of the MPD24 is its bank of 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive MPC pads, an Akai Pro exclusive. You can access four different banks of sounds from the MPC pads for a total of 64 sounds at your fingertips. The MPD24 also borrows the MPC series' assignable Q-Link controllers, enabling you to control nearly any parameters in your software in real time. You get six assignable Q-Link faders and eight assignable Q-Link 360° knobs so you'll spend less time with the mouse and more time making music. The MPD24 also gives you a dedicated set of transport controls for instant access to the most commonly used DAW or sequencing-software controls.

The MPD24 sends MIDI information over its plug-and-play USB interface so you can use it with your Mac or PC without installing any drivers. The USB connection even powers the MPD24 so the included USB cable is all you need. It comes with a custom version of FXpansion's BFD Lite drum-studio software so you can start creating right out of the box. In addition to BFD Lite and nearly any other MIDI software, you can also drive any MIDI hardware, such as synths, sound modules, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, and more.

The MPD24 is a fully programmable production and performance instrument with the feel of an MPC's controls and the ease of MIDI over USB.

RARE Wurlitzer Swingin' Rhythm EX....for sale!

Submitted here for your consideration is a very vintage drum machine that was manufactured by Wurlitzer. It was sold as an add on to go with some of the organs of the era. I am unsure of the exact date of manufacture, but would guess that it probably dates to the early to mid '70s. It measures roughly 4" tall x 7.5" wide x 9" deep.

All of the various rhythm patterns (Waltz, Latin, Foxtrot, Teen, March) work as they should and all the buttons (Drum, Brush, Snare, Block, Cymbal) operate also. The Drum button is supposed to be the bass drum. The cymbal button sound like a loosely closed hi-hat and the brush sound more like a tightly closed hi hat. Of course when I say "sound like" I use that term pretty loosely. This thing has the vintage, cheezy sound that is so sought after these days. More like thuds, clicks, and ka-cha than anything else.

The volume knob doubles as a push on/off switch and works fine. The amber lamp on the left side is the power indicator and the one on the right flashes with the beat of the rhythm. This is a mono unit and the available output is a single RCA jack on the rear panel. The cable that is included is male RCA to RCA and is about 5' long. It has been damaged and taped and can be easily replaced. The 110v power cord is in good shape. The Auxiliary multipin jack on the rear panel was probably to connect this to the control panel on a compatible Wurlitzer organ with th same controls located on the keyboard panel.

SWR Mini Mo Bass Pre Amp vs. Drum Machine!

I recorded an 80 measure drum pattern using the drums from a Roland SH-32. Mono out into the SWR Mini Mo. The SWR has killer analog distortion and a fat analog bass synth section that tracks your playing really well. That's a different story with the drums - so it ends up sounding like a dirty envelope follower. Obviously the Mini Mo was not intended to process drum loops - and that's the beauty of it!
