Up for auction we have an AKAI MPD24 midi pad controller. The unit is in mint condition as I only used it a couple of times. I am selling it with the original box, manual and inStallation CD as seen in the picture.

The MPD24 is a MIDI-over-USB pad controller for DJs, programmers, producers, and others musicians. Built around the controls from Akai Professional's industry-standard MPC series, the MPD24 is an expressive and intuitive instrument for the studio and stage.

The heart of the MPD24 is its bank of 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive MPC pads, an Akai Pro exclusive. You can access four different banks of sounds from the MPC pads for a total of 64 sounds at your fingertips. The MPD24 also borrows the MPC series' assignable Q-Link controllers, enabling you to control nearly any parameters in your software in real time. You get six assignable Q-Link faders and eight assignable Q-Link 360° knobs so you'll spend less time with the mouse and more time making music. The MPD24 also gives you a dedicated set of transport controls for instant access to the most commonly used DAW or sequencing-software controls.

The MPD24 sends MIDI information over its plug-and-play USB interface so you can use it with your Mac or PC without installing any drivers. The USB connection even powers the MPD24 so the included USB cable is all you need. It comes with a custom version of FXpansion's BFD Lite drum-studio software so you can start creating right out of the box. In addition to BFD Lite and nearly any other MIDI software, you can also drive any MIDI hardware, such as synths, sound modules, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, and more.

ACE TONE Rhythm Ace with MIDI!

This is a short demo of an Ace Tone Rhythm Ace Drum Machine to which I added MIDI trigger capability.

It's being triggered by an Oberheim DX'a' (the 'a' was the last DX model made by Oberheim and featured stock MIDI), running a few simple patterns.

The Rhythm Ace has about 9-10 drum sounds, most of them are made using resonant transistor oscillator circuits - all the transistors are Germanium - with inductors. There are no IC's anywhere within the Rhythm Ace (well, now there is with the MIDI board). Ace Tone ultimately became Roland, and while the classic TR-808 typically uses a different type of drum oscillator circuit, it's interesting to me that the Rhythm Ace seems to have a Roland quality to the sound.

The MIDI board is made by Highly Liquid and is actually intended for use in the Atari 2600. I added some interface circuitry that inverts and creates brief decaying-exponential triggers from the pulses of the Highly Liquid board.

One limitation here is that the Ace Tone COULD respond dynamically to the triggers, as the sound varies depending upon the shape and size of the trigger pulse. I didn't optimize for that, and that's pretty much why you don't here any open hats or low congas. And you CAN get the bass to boom a la 808 by tweaking a trimpot in the Rhythm Ace, but I held it back a bit here.

I do apologize for the lack of bass here - it's due to the lousy mic on my video camera. Someday I'll get my act together and record these videos with a mixed line-in to the camera.

This is a first recording with the Korg padKontrol + Roland TD-10. I used to play an Akai MPD-24 pad controller, but just switched to this Korg padKontrol, because it responds better to soft touches. Some more information HERE!

ANALOG MIDI drum machine!

Analog MIDI drum machine, The enclosure came from one of our local thrift stores where I was hoping to find a cash box or similar metal enclosure. This recipe card holder happened to be exactly the right size, and its easy-opening lid was something I needed because I didn't want all of the controls to be mounted on the outside of the case. The 8 knobs on the top of the case control Master Volume, Kick, Clave, Snare, Conga, Low Tom, High Tom, and Hi-Hat levels. The two LEDs indicate power and midi activity...check out more about this little gem HERE!
