It has worn through to the metal reinforcing strap .
Here is some info sourced from the web :
The Ace Tone Rhythm Ace FR-1 has a secured place in drum machine history
as the first transistorised machine to appear on the market in 1967.
The Rhythm Ace was the brainchild of Ikutaro Kakehashi,
(founder of Ace Tone and later, Roland in 1972).
With this in mind, it is fairly safe to draw the conclusion that the FR-1
was effectively the first of the Roland TR (Transistorised Rhythm)
series of drum machines.

The FR-1 effectively revolutionised the industry because prior to this,
what few drum machines there were, ran on valves and before that,
via a mechanical disc system.
Transistors must have been the "new thing" back then because
the components are even listed in the specifications...
Transistors x 38 and diodes x 107!!!

ACETONE BENTLEY RHYTHM ACE Vintage 70s...for sale!

Acetone BENTLEY RHYTHM ACE Vintage 70s Drum Machine.

Here is a fantastic vintage drum machine from Acetone - who later became Roland, this is the Bentley Rhythm Ace (yes the band was named after these!) and dates I believe from the 70s. Its a classy looking machine in a real wooden cabinet with a wooden music stand which locks in the upright position, or can fold flat.

It has buttons to select rhythms such as Rock n' Roll, Swing, Ballad, Waltz, March, etc., and a large selection of Latin rhythms, etc. The sounds are cheesy but very useable. There are sliders to control volume and tempo, and you can balance the volume of separate instruments such as bass drum, cymbals, snare, guiro & claves, or remove the instrument from the mix completely. Think Jean Michel Jarre Oxygene to get an idea of what this can do, also more modern retro music like Air. Fully analogue it has a lovely warm vintage sound.

I've cleaned and polished the cabinet, and cleaned the jack sockets and slider controls. Everything seems to be working perfectly. You can silence the output (while keeping the pattern running), or start and stop the rhythm instantly with a neat 'touch' plate on the front. There is also a start/stop socket on the back for a footswitch, but I haven't tested this.

ACE TONE Rhythm Ace with MIDI!

This is a short demo of an Ace Tone Rhythm Ace Drum Machine to which I added MIDI trigger capability.

It's being triggered by an Oberheim DX'a' (the 'a' was the last DX model made by Oberheim and featured stock MIDI), running a few simple patterns.

The Rhythm Ace has about 9-10 drum sounds, most of them are made using resonant transistor oscillator circuits - all the transistors are Germanium - with inductors. There are no IC's anywhere within the Rhythm Ace (well, now there is with the MIDI board). Ace Tone ultimately became Roland, and while the classic TR-808 typically uses a different type of drum oscillator circuit, it's interesting to me that the Rhythm Ace seems to have a Roland quality to the sound.

The MIDI board is made by Highly Liquid and is actually intended for use in the Atari 2600. I added some interface circuitry that inverts and creates brief decaying-exponential triggers from the pulses of the Highly Liquid board.

One limitation here is that the Ace Tone COULD respond dynamically to the triggers, as the sound varies depending upon the shape and size of the trigger pulse. I didn't optimize for that, and that's pretty much why you don't here any open hats or low congas. And you CAN get the bass to boom a la 808 by tweaking a trimpot in the Rhythm Ace, but I held it back a bit here.

I do apologize for the lack of bass here - it's due to the lousy mic on my video camera. Someday I'll get my act together and record these videos with a mixed line-in to the camera.
