EKO RHYTHMAKER vintage drumbox!

playing around with an EKO Rhythmaker - an old, analog Italian drumbox from the seventies. It has a volume fader for each sound (there are 7 sounds and 7 sliders) and a SUSTAIN knob for all sounds together.

MOTM730 As A Drum Machine Demo!

Second experiment of this new Synth Tech MOTM-730 Voltage Controlled Pulse Divider, an idea to try doing a basic drum beat and then expanded from there.

E-MU Drumulator Demo!

The E-Mu Drumulator entered the stage in 1983 and was one of the first inexpensive drum machines to utilize real drum samples, competing with big boys such as Linn and Oberheim. The Drumulator retailed for $999 back then and could be coupled with an electronic drum pad and/or software for the Apple ][ that allowed for more detailed on-screen programming.

The initial models had no MIDI, but could be synced via click signals. I use a MIDI to Drumulator syncbox from Dinsync.com in my setup with an MPC 500, however the Drumulator is being synced independently in this clip.

The Drumulator uses the same analog filters as the famed SP-12, SP-1200, and Emulator, giving it a rich and full sound, despite the simple (presumably) 8-bit drum samples.

Like many of my drum machines, I primarily use this to jam over while scratching. It's a fun machine that marks the beginnings of what would later become a Hip-Hop classic: the SP-12/1200.

BEATBEARING demo!

A tangible rhythm sequencer. Ball bearings are used to trigger (Roland TR-808) drum sounds. Visual feedback is provided from a CRT display underneath to indicate the current time and the state of each beat.

REAKTOR Drums....!

LOUD video demo of a drum machine I just made on my very old version of Reaktor. The Randomize module is used on the hi-hat and hi-Q parts and can be faded in and out for automatic IDM. Very pleased with one of my first Reaktor experiments.

ROLAND CompuRhythm CR-78 Demo!

Brief demo of some of the features on the Roland CR-78 drum machine. Mostly playing around with rhythm selections (incl. A/B variations), voice cancel, tempo, automatic fills, automatic fading, etc. And of course no CR-78 demo would be complete without playing "In the Air Tonight" and some Hall & Oates ("Kiss On My List"). The former uses the "Disco-2" rhythm with snare cancelled out; the latter uses "Rock-1" with automatic fill 7.

On a side note, I haven't found any permutation of rhythms to give the exact bass drum pattern on "In the Air Tonight". Maybe this is how Phil did it as well, but I just used the programming interface to make a custom rhythm with this bass drum pattern. Then I load this at the same time as "Disco-2" (these are the two yellow buttons pressed in the demo).

THE Maestro Rhythm King MRK-2!

A great Demonstration of the sounds and preset rhythms of the Maestro Rhythm King MRK-2 drum machine, dubbed "the funk box" by Sly Stone and used on his classic album "There's a Riot Goin' On", lovely machine!
